The Lakers Were Right, I Was Wrong, and George Karl Has a Lot to Say about It

Kobe Bryant motivated his team by telling them during a timeout mid-way through the fourth quarter with his team ahead by nearly twenty points, “no mercy.” If Kobe keeps that up, we might as well skip the NBA Finals and give the trophy to LA.
Los Angeles humiliated the Denver Nuggets in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals. The Lakers await the winner in the East and have five days to rest before the Finals begin on Thursday.
The Lakers were right in believing they would beat Denver. I was wrong. I could write about how Denver had the upper hand early in the series and has a more unified team. I could discuss how Carmelo Anthony, after taking a big step of maturity this postseason to exalt his game to elite status, seemed to have given up in Game 6, lacking the perseverance and experience needed to take his team to the next level. Or I could deliberate how another year of Chauncey Billups’ leadership will command the Nuggets to being 2009-10 preseason favorites.
But the Lakers earned this ink. Or rather, these bytes.
The Lakers began the series struggling to defend, desperate to score. They ended it putting the fear of You Know Who into the survivor of Orlando – Cleveland. Kobe showed that the championship fire is alive, admitting after the game that Denver’s toughness on the inside and ability to score on the perimeter forced the Lakers to elevate their game. “Denver is a great team,” praised Bryant, giving the Nuggets something to chew on this week while the Lakers prepare for their 30th championship finale.
Spaniard star Pau Gasol returned to being a dominant inside scorer, offering after the game that the Lakers gave “a great overall performance.” Derek Fisher came out of hiding, Lamar Odom woke up, Luke Walton made open shots that would make his father proud, and Trevor Ariza established himself as a bona fide NBA starting small forward. These Lakers arrived at the right time, in the closeout game.
In the postgame news conference, Lakers Coach Phil Jackson credited his team for returning to the Finals this year, having lost last year to the Boston Celtics. Jackson said his team played “at a top level.” You could say that again, Phil. Blowing out a sleepy yet talented and physical Nuggets team in Denver by 27 points impresses everyone from Hollywood to the Rocky Mountain Region. And the rest of us too.
Nuggets Coach George Karl is left to consider what could have been, but he has nothing to be ashamed of, seeing that his team had little emotional fortitude left to overcome LA. After the game Karl said the team didn’t get the needed boost from the fans. That’s funny, isn’t it the fans who need the boost from the team? Isn’t that why we fans pay the industry that is called the National Basketball Association big bucks, to entertain us?
But Karl finished the season on a classy note, congratulating the Lakers and telling journalists to write good stories from the entire season about each of his players, rather than focusing on the poorly played two hour game just completed. He also suggested that Kobe Bryant was untouchable, saying, “I think Jesus would have trouble covering him.” Apologizing to the Nuggets fans, he also said that Phil Jackson “probably kicked my ass as a coach.”
The winner of the Magic vs. Cavs series may need some help from Jesus to beat these Lakers.
