Bliss Ski
1961 marked the beginning of Tod Mountain’s official resort history as Burfield Chair and Burfield Lodge were constructed & completed. This allowed the general public to experience what only daring powder hunters had experienced before. After 7 years of skiing bliss, Tod Mountain experienced an unfortunate fire which put the ski-hill out of commission for 2 years between 1968 and 1970. Learning from this catastrophe, Tod Mountain added two additional ski lifts shortly after re-opening to prevent future mountain-wide closures.
As Tod Mountain’s credibility and popularity as a vacation destination gained steam, the need for infrastructure advancement was felt. This was partially addressed in 1988 when a 49 lot subdivision was built directly across from the original Burfield Lodge. Soon after, a new road was completed connecting Tod Mountain to the nearby village of Whitecroft. These advances in Tod Mountain’s infrastructure made the destination more accessible than ever to its’ visitors.
In 1992, Japanese Hi-Lex Corporation (formerly known as Nippon Cable Company Ltd.) identified these advancements and purchased the mountain for an undisclosed sum. Wasting little time, Nippon Cable Company Ltd. soon generated a long term plan which then evolved into a new Master Development Agreement with the Province of British Columbia. Construction began right away in accordance with the first phase of the Master Development Agreement. This consisted of the creation of new facilities, new runs, new infrastructure, and three new lifts, two of which were quad chairs. The first phase of development amounted to approximately 12 million dollars in spending. Tod Mountain officially became a part of Sun Peaks Resort in 1993.
Sun Peaks Resort has since undergone considerable progressive change earning awards from a variety of organizations including: Snow Country Magazine, Ski Canada Magazine, Cadogan Guides, BC Hydro, and the Canadian Ski Counsil.
Today, Sun Peaks is one of the leading ski resorts in Canada and provides compelling reasons to vacation during all months of the year.
