How can I improve my ski fitness?

I already work out, but I don’t spend much time on exercises that would condition me for skiing, and I am feeling the pain today in my legs and lower back. What could I do to get into better ski shape?

Put a phone book on the floor, stand so it’s on one side of you, keep your feet together and jump sideways over it and back again.
