The general feeling of opinion among the medical profession and skiing/snowboarding associations is that wearing ski helmets should not be made compulsory. However when they do happen they seem to be a major component in any death.

This sentiment is echoed through the varieties of ski and snowboarding forums where the issue of mandatory wearing of ski helmets and snowboard helmets is being hotly discussed. Many disagree that by making ski helmets mandatory skiers and riders will ski or ride with less care as the helmet may give them a fake sense of security.

This not only includes staff at Vail but also Breckenridge, Beaver creek, Keystone and Heavenly. Also all kids under twelve attending Vail Resorts ski schools will be required to wear a ski or snowboard helmet.
In Europe plenty of the ski schools are actively encouraging their ski and boarding instructors to wear helmets. Italy has led the way in Europe re introducing a law making it mandatory for kids to wear a ski helmet. This has been followed by lower Austria who have introduced a corresponding law.

Ski and snowboard outlets have also spotted a marked increase in the number of ski helmet sales following these high profile incidents.

They suspect that it is inescapable the wearing of ski and snowboarding helmets will be made compulsory for all. For the moment it appears that commonsense will have to overcome when it comes to deciding whether to wear a ski helmet while skiing or riding.
